Thundershirt Cookie Recipe
My dog has anxiety. He also has attachment issues and thinks thunderstorms and fireworks are the beginning of the apocalypse. But after a treat with just a few milligrams of THC and CBD, he sleeps peacefully through storms. With marijuana treats in the cupboard, you’ll never need a thundershirt again.
Henry is a 19 pound poodle/cocker spaniel mix and I keep his dose around 2-3 milligrams of THC at a time. Bigger dogs can have bigger doses, but we never want to get a pet too high. They won’t understand what is happening to them, and they get just as anxious as people.
No one knows if marijuana will treat cancer in dogs, but everyone wants to try. For dogs with serious conditions like cancer and tumors, high-dose treats with non-decarboxylated marijuana gets the analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of THCa without a high. Low THC, high CBD strains are also good for dogs.
One day, after I had spent the morning at the stove making marijuana edibles, I noticed that Henry was wobbling and falling over. When he peed on himself I scooped him up and ran to the car. I sobbed on the way to the vet because I thought my little doodle was dying.
“This dog is stoned.” The vet couldn’t hide her smile. She pulled a handful of treats out of her pocket and offered them to Henry, who could barely lift his head.
“I have NO idea how that happened.” I was terrified she would call social services and put Henry in foster care. “What do I do now?”
“Take him to White Castle,” she said.
If your pet finds your stash, you’ll know soon enough. They will lose their balance and bladder control and get the same anxiety a person would get from too much THC. They will startle easily. Make them comfortable, give them lots of water, their favorite snack and tuck a towel or two under them before they fall asleep, just in case. They’ll be fine in a few hours.
Big dogs can handle 5 milligrams of THC, while petite pups need just 2-3 milligrams of THC at a time. At the dispensary, ask for a low THC, high strain of flower or concentrate to make edibles for animals. CBD reduces pain and anxiety in dogs, too.
These doggie cookies can be totally customized to suit your dogs exact needs. Add his favorite flavors, dose them for his weight and roll them into his own bite-sized pieces, whether that’s a tennis ball or a ping pong ball. Cook them longer for more crunch, or pull them from the oven a little early to keep them soft for older teeth.
